At Sea
Our Three sons, having grown and left the “nest”, my wife Sue decided to embark on a new journey in her life.  For the past four years, at thee-week-intervals, she has been volunteering her time with Global Volunteers, a Minnesota based nonprofit, nonsectarian service program founded in 1984.  This has taken her to Tanzania, East Africa to a small remote rural village called Pommern.

Sue, along with several of her team mates have participated in a variety of community identified projects, some of which have included constructing buildings, painting classrooms, teaching in the schools and working in the medical field.

With the dedicated medical staff of the village, Sue puts her nursing skills to work participating in community health care.  She has assisted in well-baby immunization, prenatal and medical clinics, as well as labor and delivery and home visits.

Medical equipment is often improvised but is managed very successfully.  Medicines are at a premium and often times traditional herbs and home remedies are used.

The village medical staff with much tender loving care, efficiency, hard work, and dedication has contributed to the success of maintaining the well being of the community.  This village of very few resources does manage to survive and maintain hope for the future as people work together.

Free time allows the volunteers to get to know one another, learn about different aspects of life in Tanzania, and to see the breathtaking sights for which it is known.

In addition to playing with the children, volunteers learn to basket weave and cook traditional foods.  Often times volunteers and invited to participate in meals at village homes, attend school functions and weddings, as well as… yes!! learn new skills.

Volunteering is a gift of ones time to do something worth while, for someone or for some cause.  People who volunteer still need support for a work to continue.  Sue and I achieve this support through purchasing textbooks.

Global Volunteers coordinated this program, and sends teams of volunteers to sites in 20 countries around the world, and within the U.S. year-round.  One-three-week programs are available throughout the year.
